Caprese

Caprese is a simple Italian salad made of sliced fresh mozzarella, tomatoes and basil, seasoned with salt and extra virgin olive oil. Like pizza Margherita, it features the colors of the Italian flag: green, white and red.

150 away from your Villa Belvedere, there is a small greengrocer. Go there and buy tomatoes and fresh basil leaves (pomodori e basilico), or pick up from vegetables garden of Villa Belvedere if you are in the right season. In front of Villa Belvedere buy Mozzarella or Fior di latte.

Once home: cut mozzarella in slices, cut tomatoes in slices, and add some leaves of basil.
Put all together and enjoy this “Caprese” dish, together with Villa Belvedere sweet olive oils.

Tips

Neapolitans use to add to Caprese green olives.

On Sundays you will find a small van just out, on the left of the gate, of Villa Belvedere that sells several typical articles. Buy whatever you like, but do not forget you are there to buy Olive Verdi (Green Olives).

These olives are different from any other olive fruits. They are characterized by a sweet taste. Buy at least 500gr. Once back home in Villa Belvedere,  remove the old water and wash them under running water as they are a bit salty.

After tasting them use, to garnish your Caprese and you are eating as a true Neapolitans.
